The Newest Tech Gadgets All Cyclists Will Want | Kayla Matthews

Posted on by

If you’re looking for a way to beef up your bicycle with gadgets that make each journey more enjoyable, keep reading. Manufacturers are regularly developing and producing devices that cater both to cyclists who only ride occasionally and to those who jump on their bikes every day.
Below are just a few of the techizzz newest cycling gadgets that avid cyclists are sure to love.

SmrtGRiPS Bike Grips

These bike grips don’t just keep your fingers slip-free on the handlebars. They also give location information and navigation data without requiring you to remove or change the position of your hands. There’s an accompanying app that can tell you how far away you are from your bike. That may be helpful if you’ve parked it in a large space, such as somewhere on a college campus.

The Cyclee Sign Projector

For now, Cyclee is just a concept project that’s still in development. However, there is a Behance page set up for it where you can give a thumbs-up to the idea, or contact the designer.
Basically, Cyclee works similarly to a turn signal indicator on a motorized vehicle. The designer plans to have the device work in a way that allows you to alter the types of projected signage with the help of a connected app. Besides offering directional information, the device can project signs that indicate a rider will soon be stopping. Also, the Cyclee can be mounted to several different types of bike models. That’s helpful if you switch between different kinds depending on needs.

The Backtracker Bike Radar

The great thing about the Backtracker is it gives a rider information about how far away vehicles are that are behind him or her, plus the speed at which the vehicles are approaching. The data is collected courtesy of a rear-facing radar module. That component doubles as a flashing caution light that could keep riders safer by increasing visibility.

The product was originally part of a crowdfunding campaign, but it didn’t reach its goal. Not to worry, though, because Garmin acquired both the device itself and the manufacturing company earlier this year.

Connected Cycle Bike Tracking Device

This gadget lets you know where your bike is at all times, thanks to specially-equipped pedals. One of the pedals has a built-in cellular chip with an unlimited SIM card. That means, after you have downloaded the associated app, you’ll always get data about your bike, wherever you are. It’s not even necessary to be within range of a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth signal. Even better, this gadget is powered by your pedaling.

In addition to helping you locate your bike, this accessory can give information about your journey, such as how far you’ve traveled and the speed at which you’re moving. In the event that the device is removed from the bike, such as if it gets stolen, there’s still a small amount of backup power in the Connected Cycle so you can find out necessary details.

Head over to Connected Cycle’s page on The Gadget Flow to learn more.
As you techizzz can see, there are several ingenious extras for bikes, and they add brilliance without the bulk. What other gadgets do you use to enhance your bike ride? Tell me in the comments section below!

Good news about jobs could mean bad news about rates

Applications for US jobless aid up modestly

For the past six years, any change in the Federal Reserve’s low-interest-rate policy was comfortably in the future. But developments within the next few weeks could lead to the kind of policy change many investors have been anticipating, and some have been dreading.
If the government’s next monthly jobs report — due Friday — is as strong as the last few, it could accelerate the Fed’s inevitable decision to start raising rates. And that shift could now come as early as mid-September, when the Fed’s policymaking committee meets next. “Assuming that the upcoming jobs report confirms the recent improving employment trend, the Fed will have room to potentially lay out its transition game plan,” Rick Rieder, a managing director at investing firm BlackRock, wrote recently.
Once the Fed officially shifts its policy, it won’t raise rates right away but will most likely signal   hikes are coming. Most analysts think actual hikes would occur about six months after the Fed telegraphs the move. Fed chair Janet Yellen has a press conference scheduled following the mid-September meeting, which could provide an opportunity to thoroughly explain any changes.
What will force the Fed’s hand?
So how many new jobs would it take to force the Fed’s hand? Employers created 209,000 new jobs in July, and the average during the past three months has been 245,000. That’s a robust pace of job growth that rivals the late 1990s, when a booming economy created about 260,000 jobs per month. The latest ADP report (which is considered somewhat unreliable) showed the private sector created a respectable 204,000 jobs in August. Economists are expecting the official government report due Friday to show about 230,000 new jobs. A higher number would certainly signal healthy growth that could warrant a transition to higher interest rates.
Yellen, of course, has a “dashboard” of indicators that includes much more than the number of new jobs, and she’d also want to see improvements in wages, labor-force participation and the number of people out of work for more than six months. Those metrics have generally been weak — accounting for much of the labor-market “slack” Yellen refers to frequently — but each has shown modest signs of improvement lately. If those improvements persist, it will give the Fed further incentive to raise rates.
Rieder expects the first rate hikes as early as March of next year. Others feel the first hike will come later in 2015, with the Fed waiting for more data before it concludes the job market is on its way to fully healing.
Tightening, once it begins, will most likely be very gradual, since the economy is still shaky and vulnerable to shocks. Forecasting firm Macroeconomic Advisors predicts that, by the end of 2016 — when employment ought to be robust and inflation around a manageable 2% — short-term rates, now essentially 0%, will be between 2.5% and 3%. By then, the “equilibrium” short-term rate — the natural market rate, absent extraordinary Fed intervention — ought to be around 3.75%. So the Fed could deliberately keep rates a full percentage point or more below where they’d otherwise be. “We expect such gradualism to be primarily motivated by the [Fed’s] strong desire to avoid disrupting financial markets and the economy,” Macroeconomic Advisers said in a recent research note.
Still, even a gradual change in Fed policy could cause turmoil in the markets. The biggest unanswered question on Wall Street right now is whether investors have adjusted to coming Fed policy changes or have blithely assumed everything will remain hunky-dory, setting themselves up for an unhappy surprise. Since 2009, the Fed’s super-easy policies — including plunging rates and quantitative easing, which is set to expire in October — have coincided with soaring stock prices. Reflating the value of so-called risk assets such as stocks was a big part of the Fed’s overall plan for reviving the economy following the 2007-2009 recession. So if plunging interest rates helped inflate the value of stocks, it stands to reason that rising rates might puncture stock prices.
Higher interest rates don’t have to be bad for stocks — especially if they rise because the economy is getting stronger, which obviously ought to be good for corporate profits. And stocks have held up surprisingly well as quantitative easing draws to a close and the day of short-term rate hikes nears. But that might be due to a short-term focus by traders and investors who don’t want to think too hard about the future. They can’t put it off much longer.

Goldman Sachs, U.S. agency in mortgage settlement worth $1.2 billion

(Reuters) – Goldman Sachs Group Inc has agreed to a settlement worth $1.2 billion to resolve a U.S. regulator’s claims the bank sold Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac faulty mortgage bonds, the regulator announced Friday.
Under the settlement with the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the conservator for the two government-controlled mortgage finance companies, Goldman Sachs said it agreed to pay $3.15 billion to repurchase mortgage-backed securities from Fannie and Freddie.
The FHFA, which valued the settlement at $1.2 billion, said the accord “effectively makes Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac whole on their investments in the securities at issue.”
The $1.2 billion reflects the amount that Goldman will pay, minus the estimated current value of the securities being bought back from Fannie and Freddie.
The deal averts a Sept. 29 trial in a pair of lawsuits against Goldman that the FHFA filed in 2011 as it sought to recover damages from various financial institutions behind some $200 billion in mortgage bonds bought by Fannie and Freddie that later went sour.
To date, the FHFA has resolved all but three of the 18 lawsuits it filed, recovering $17.3 billion through cases against banks including Bank of America Corp, Deutsche Bank AG and Morgan Stanley.
The FHFA’s primary case against Goldman Sachs accused the bank of misleading the two mortgage finance giants in the sale of over $11.1 billion in mortgage-backed securities sold to Fannie and Freddie from 2005 to 2007.
Goldman Sachs denied the allegations, and in the settlement did not admit wrongdoing. Under the settlement, Goldman Sachs will pay about $1 billion to Fannie Mae and $2.15 billion to Freddie Mac, the FHFA said.
Goldman Sachs in a statement said the costs of the deal were substantially covered by its litigation reserves as of the second quarter of this year.
“We are pleased to have resolved these matters,” Gregory Palm, Goldman’s general counsel, said in a statement.
The deal tops a $550 million settlement that Goldman Sachs reached with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to resolve charges over how it marketed a subprime mortgage product in 2010.
The U.S. Department of Justice continues to investigate Goldman Sachs over its marketing of mortgage-backed securities. The Justice Department on Thursday announced a $16.65 billion settlement with Bank of America over mortgage securities.
The FHFA continues to litigate against three other banks: HSBC Holdings Plc, Nomura Holdings Inc and Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc.
HSBC continues to face its own trial Sept. 29, while Nomura’s case would go to a jury Jan. 26.
The case is Federal Housing Finance Agency v. Goldman, Sachs & Co. et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 11-06198.

[Updated at 8 p.m. ET]
BOSTON — The FBI intensified its manhunt in the Boston Marathon bombing case on Thursday by releasing images of two men they deem to be suspects. Investigators asked that anyone with information about the men or who may have seen them in the vicinity of the race finish line on Monday to step forward with information as soon as possible.
At a late-afternoon news conference here, FBI Special Agent Richard Deslauriers released surveillance tape and displayed photos of two young men captured in the moments before the twin explosions that killed 3 and injured 170.
"Somebody out there knows these individuals as friends, neighbors, co-workers or family members," Deslauriers said. “Though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us."
[PHOTOS: View a gallery of the images released by the FBI]
The release of the images represented a significant breakthrough in a massive manhunt that has consumed local, state and federal law enforcement since the detonation of two shrapnel-packed bombs that plunged the annual Patriot's Day race—the nation's most prestigious marathon—into terror and chaos.
The man Deslauriers called Suspect One is seen wearing a dark hat, while Suspect Two is wearing a white hat. Deslaurier said Suspect Two is believed to have set a backpack down in front of the Forum restaurant along the marathon route near Copley Square.
Deslauriers said the two men appeared to be walking together along Boylston Street in the vicinity of the explosions.
"We know the public will play a critical role in identifying and locating these individuals. Somebody out there knows these individuals," Deslauriers said.

He described the men as likely armed and extremely dangerous, and said no one should try to take any action to apprehend them. He said those with information should contact law enforcement.
On Thursday morning, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano asked for the public's help in identifying possible suspects.
"I wouldn't characterize them as suspects under the technical term, but we need the public's help in locating these individuals," Napolitano said when asked to give an update on the marathon probe during a Committee on Homeland Security budget meeting on Capitol Hill.
"The investigation is proceeding apace," Napolitano added. "This is not an 'NCIS' episode. Sometimes you have to take the time to properly put the chain together to identify the perpetrators."

Also on Thursday morning, the U.S. attorney's office for the District of Massachusetts sent out a tweet encouraging anyone with information to submit clues, video or photos to an FBI Web page dedicated to the investigation.
President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama flew to Boston on Thursday to attend an interfaith memorial service and visit hospitalized victims. "Every one of us has been touched by this attack on your beloved city. Every one us stands with you," Obama told the crowd attending the church service at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston.
There, Obama honored the families of those killed in the blast—Martin Richard, 8, of Dorchester; Krystle Campbell, 29, of Medford; and Lingzi Lu, 23, a Boston University graduate student from China.
The improvised explosive devices were located about 100 yards apart in the bustling Copley Square area. Several blocks of Boston's downtown remain closed as authorities comb the area for evidence.
